What is CBT & EMDR?

CBT focuses on the negative cognitions (thoughts, worries, images and intrusions) and behaviours that are causing emotional and physical distress. It looks to understand and break unhelpful vicious cycles so that we can achieve symptom relief and meet our goals.

EMDR is a treatment for processing traumatic memories that are causing distress. It is effective at treating many problems including phobias and chronic pain. By using bilateral eye movements difficult memories can be effectively processed by the brain allowing the memory fo feel less vivid and painful and helping you feel able to move forward with your life.

What happens if I cant make a session?

For therapy to be effective it is important that sessions take place on a regular basis. If you cancel your session more than 48 hours in advance, there will be no charge for the session. If you cancel within 48 hours of your session you will be charged the full amount.

What happens in the first session?

Following a free 15 minute phone call we will schedule in your first therapy session. This will be a chance to get to know more about you and the problems you would like help with. We will look at your goals for therapy and set a therapy contract for weekly, 50 minute sessions.

Do you prescribe medication?

No, I am not able to prescribe medication. However I have basic training on commonly prescribed psychological medication so may be able to answer any questions or concerns you have. I will direct you to your GP for anything I am unable to help you with.

How long will therapy last?

This is something we can discuss together in our first session depending on what your needs and goals are for therapy. We will have regular reviews to see how you are finding therapy and agree on how many sessions would be helpful for you. For both CBT and EMDR a minimum of six sessions is usually recommended to experience progress. However, there is no maximum or minimum number of sessions.

How is my privacy protected?

Everything we discuss in your session is confidential. The only time I am obliged to break confidentiality is if you or someone around you is at risk, in which case I endeavour to discuss this with you first.
